Day 5

Tuesday October 9th, 2012

Hello and welcome to Day 5.

Today was a travel day - flying from Vancouver to Kelowna.

Woke up, and decided to head downstairs to the hotel restaurant to have breakfast.  As we had only received 5 breakfast coupons, Randy decided to go to the front desk and see whether we should've gotten more.  But we found out that with the corporate rate, we should've only received 4 coupons (rate only covers breakfast for 1 person per day).  The person working at the front desk actually plucked the remaining coupon out of Randy's hand and took it away from us.  Wow.  So, it looks like we weren't going to be eating at the hotel for breakfast.  The thing is that we were actually planning to use 1 coupon and then pay for the buffet for the other person.  So, if they had let us keep the coupon, they would've had us pay for 1 breakfast.  But, they ended up with us being pissed off and going to Starbucks for breakfast instead.  This is amongst the worst customer service I've ever received from a hotel... let alone a Fairmont property, of which I usually thought they had a better service model than this.

After breakfast, we went back to the room and packed up.  We didn't really have time to do anything before we had to head to the airport, so we just hung out in the room until noon - when we checked out.  We took the train to the airport, had a bite to eat and caught our flight to Kelowna.

View from Delta Grand OkanaganThe flight was on a Dash-8, so there was no inflight entertainment system to keep us amused.  So, I read magazines while Randy played Angry Birds on his iPad.  It was sunny and warm when we arrived in Kelowna.  We grabbed our rental car, and headed to the Delta Grand Okanagan. We were able to get an upgrade to a lakeview room.  Which was a much nicer view than the Hotel Vancouver (which had no view because the windows were covered up due to construction of the building facade).

We dropped off our bags, then decided to head out to the Orchard Park shopping mall to get some more saline solution for Randy.  As it was his saline solution that caused all the grief going through security in the Edmonton airport, he decided to just leave the original bottle behind in Vancouver and buy a new one in Kelowna.

Randy having short rib beef dip at Wild AppleWe wandered around the surprisingly big mall, then decided to go to the Wild Apple for supper.  Randy had the braised short rib beef dip and I had the wild apple chicken club with the turkey confit poutine.  Randy's beef dip was very delicious, and the turkey confit poutine was like having Thanksgiving dinner in a bowl.  Sooooo good.  I also enjoyed a nice glass of Red Rooster chardonnay with my meal.  (Randy didn't have anything to drink - as he was driving).

We were told that one of the specialties of the restaurant was a duck confit.  Just as we sat down at our table, a duck comes right up to the glass door next to my chair.  I told the duck "Run!  Run for your life - unless you want to end up as confit!".  But the waitress assured us that that duck had been around for a while and was in no danger of becoming someone's dinner.

Our meals were very filling, so we didn't bother having dessert.  Instead, we just went back to our room and took it easy.
