Welcome to Day 5 of Janet and Randy's Kauai Adventure 2014

Monday, November 10th, 2014

Woke up with a very sore throat and congested sinuses.  Great.  I had fallen asleep at about 8pm the previous night and woke up at 6:00am.  We had some breakfast on the lanai, then I went back to bed for a while.  Randy went down to hang out the pool while I was sleeping. It was sunny when I started, but then it clouded over... oh well, it's warm and I'm by the ocean.  How wrong is this really ? after a while it clouded over, so it was about time to do something else.

Around 10:30am, I was feeling a little better, so we showered up and decided to head up North.  It was around noon by the time we got there, so we stopped to eat at the Hanalei Juice and Taro Company.  We shared a plate of Kalua pork - which was very yummy.  We spent some time wandering around the shops in Hanalei, then headed to the St. Regis Hotel in Princeville.

Randy & Janet at the St. RegisThe St. Regis is a very fancy hotel - however, it is a little annoying that it is so difficult to park there.  Back in the olden days, there used to be a free self-park lot for people that were visiting the hotel.  However, a few years ago, they changed this so that the only parking available is valet parking.  There is a very small parking lot available for beach parking - but this lot has about 10 spots in it.  Luckily, there was one spot open - but it was a tight squeeze to get in.  Luckily Randy is an excellent parker, so we were able to park the car without any issue.

The reason why we were at the St. Regis was because there is a Tori Richard store in the hotel.  Randy has a number of Tory Richard shirts, and I even have some tops and dresses.  Randy had seen a particular shirt in a magazine, and wanted to see if he could find it in the store.  The store in the St. Regis was quite small and they didn't have that shirt in stock.  But they said that the could order it online and have it shipped to the store in a few days.  So, Randy agreed to do that.  He also found two other shirts that he decided to buy as well.  I didn't find anything for myself.  Any of the shirts or dresses that I liked all seemed to be made out of silk, and I am far too lazy to buy anything that has to be dry cleaned.

We also stopped at the Hanalei outlook - that looks out over the Hanalei valley and some taro fields.  Took a few pictures and continued on our way.  We went into Lihue to hit the farmer's market at Kukui Grove.  Bought a little more fruit (guava and some more papaya).  We went back to a surf shop in the mall called Deja Vu - where we had seen some Hydro Flasks the day before.  I decided that we needed to get a couple more Hydro Flasks to add to our collection (what - these new ones were different sizes than what we currently have, so I had to get them!).  Because one can't have too many Hydro Flasks, you know, like 8 of them !

Janet at Hanalei lookoutMy voice was starting to get really rough, so we headed back to our condo so that I could get some liquids into me.  Randy had me lay down for a rest while he went out for a run.  Running along an path that is along the beach/ocean, is just so relaxing and enjoyable.  After he got back, we went out for supper.  Whenever I have a cold, my mom insists that having won ton soup will help me get better.  So, I suggested to Randy that we go to Garden Isle BBQ in Lihue for some won ton soup and orange chicken.   When we got there, it was a little busy, so there weren't any tables available.  There was another couple also looking for a table, so we suggested that we share one of the big tables.  They reluctantly agreed, but then 2 tables came free - so they went off to sit at their own table. Meh - Whatever. We had shared a table with people before at Garden Isle BBQ, and it can actually be quite fun.

We ended up being seated at a table for 6.  We got our won ton soup (which was very yummy, and felt really good on my throat) and the orange chicken.  This orange chicken was much better than the stuff we got in the Honolulu airport.  We were about halfway through our meal when we noticed some locals looking around for a table.  We told them that they could sit with us - and they said they would just sit down until another table came open.  They asked Randy if he was from around there, and were surprised when he said no.  We told them we were from Canada - and I still don't think they believed us.  The guy that sat next to me said he had been to Canada and had been to a big mall with submarines and bungee jumping.  I told him that was where we were from, and that we lived just a few minutes away from that mall.  They were fun to chat with until a table opened up - and they went to have their supper.

When we got back to the resort, we went across the street to the Safeway to get more juice.  I had drank up quite a bit of juice during the day due to my sore throat.  Then we settled in for the evening, having some drinks and watching TV.  and maybe staying awake until past 9 pm ?
